Horse Riding in Jordan

Horse riding in Jordan

Horse riding in Jordan

Imagine yourself on a passionate horse, gallop in all freedom through the most stunning landscapes in the desert of Jordan, the Wadi Rum. No limitation of bridleways, an open desertlandscape in front of you. Mountains, rocks, vast open spaces, different colors of sand, dried lakes full of cracks, sand dunes and stony substrate, canyons, gorges, narrow passages, the desert terrain is constantly changing. Your horse is accustomed to harsh desert conditions and will be happy to share his or her pleasure with you.

Wadi Rum

The Wadi Rum is as old as time. You are riding in the footsteps of many trade caravans and pelgrims' routes as well the Brittish officer Lawrence of Arabia which left their mark in the Wadi Rum. Rock carvings and inscriptions will tell the adventures of your predecessors. The Romans, Nabataeans and Bedouins have built several water storage facilities which we will need to visit during multi-day trips through the Wadi Rum.

What to expect with horse riding in Jordan, Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is the area of the Bedouin, and you are invited to live their nomadic life during the tour. Cooking on a camp fire. Sleeping in the wild or in rocky niches. And always in the company of horses.
Riding in the Wadi Rum is for adventurers and horse lovers, seeking new experiences in perhaps the most beautiful desert in the world.

Are you ready for a new adventure?

Bedouin horses

Since ages the Bedouin love and breed horses. Born and raised in the desert is this landscape their natural habitat. Typical of these strong horses is their maneuverability. Most are quite small, very brave but in the same time fragile. Horses of the desert are famous for their stamina, reliability and are very passionate. Some horses are very temperamentfull and some have a relaxed character. In every horse resites more or less the Arabic blood line. You will be surprised how easy these horses will learn and how obedient and perfect they are with grooming and riding. As every human, all have their special operating instruction which makes every horse unique. It will be easy to fall in love with your desert companion, your Bedouin horse.

Horses equipment

Bedouin are very inventive in horse equipment. Most horses have an English saddle, some an Arabian. Both are comfortable to ride. Some bridles are homemade, fitting to the smaller size of the horses head. All very functional. Sometimes saddle pads are used, sometimes blankets, depending on the saddle and for protecting the sensitive horseskin under the saddle.

Equestrian supplies and characteristics

Horse gaits

Every rider in the Wadi Rum must master the basic techniques: walk trot and canter. The tour is for medium and experienced horse riders.

Insurance and safety

It is mandatory to ride with a helmet and to take out an appropriate insurance  which covers risk sports such as horse riding. Booking a horse holiday is at your own risk and we accept no liability. Safety is our top priority. Horses are herd animals and have a certain rank. Therefore, given instructions should always be followed up. Prior to the horse riding there will be a brief explanation as an introduction for riding in the Wadi Rum desert.

Clothing advice

We recommend protective clothing for the intense sun which is usually abundantly present. It is mandatory to ride with a helmet. Chaps in the desert are most suitable. A thin breeches for summer and a warm one for the winter, possibly a thermal pant underneath. Gloves protect your hands from the dryness of the desert and the burning sun. Indispensable are sunglasses, a good sunscreen, lip balm and moisturizer to protect and care your skin for the desert climate. Finally, we recommend a scarf to protect your neck from the sun and optional to protect your nose and mouth from strong winds. It is also useful to bring a sleeping bag, although blankets are provided. The desert can be cold at night.

Horse spirituality

Horses offer us a prescription for spirituality embodied by their natural behavior. Horses are the best teachers and have the ability to help to transform on a soul level: mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Many horses can help you to heal your heart. They stand waiting here for you for assistance to bring peace, serenity and connection in a natural way to you.
